D’abord

CATHERINE SOLYOM, the Gazette
Published: Sunday, November 16
After a lifelong quest to meld science and conscience, environmental pioneer and grassroots activist Christian de Laet died Thursday at the age of 81.
Born in Belgium 12 years before the Second World War broke out, de Laet made Montreal his home in 1949, where the young mathematician first landed a job with Alcan.
But he spent the better part of his life travelling across the country and around the world, from the Canadian prairies to Papua New Guinea, trying to understand the global environment and humans' place within it.
At a time when few thought of natural resources as anything but commodities ready to be exploited, de Laet was already talking about the "sustainability of civilization" to anyone who would listen.
Many of them did.
"It's a great loss - he was a very dear person to so many people," said Sylvie Van Brabant, a filmmaker currently working on a documentary about de Laet and other environmental pioneers around the world.
"He had great wit and a sense of humour. He was a genius who worked in so many places and with so many people across the globe." After a decade in the private sector, de Laet's public career took off in 1964, when he was elected the first secretary-general of the Canadian Council of Resources and Environment Ministers.
He spent nine years criss-crossing the country trying to forge a consensus on resource management and raising Canadian awareness of environmental concerns along the way.
As early as 1966, he was able to put a figure on how much Canadians were losing to water, air and soil pollution every year - $494 each.
"He really pioneered the environmental movement in Canada by getting all the provincial and federal ministers to work together," said Wayne Kines, co-founder of the World Media Institute in Ottawa, who has worked with de Laet on and off for 30 years.
It was with the CCREM that de Laet attended the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm - considered a turning point in the development of environmental politics - making his mark on a global scale.
Over the next decade, he would be at the forefront of the new science of sustainable development, attending conferences and fulfilling assignments for a wide range of public and private agencies, from Argentina to Zaire.
In Papua New Guinea, for example, he was asked to prepare the environmental sector for coming independence from Australia in 1975.
In 1977, de Laet was invited by Commonwealth Secretary-General Shridath Ramphal to become his science adviser.
Ramphal said of de Laet's work at the time that it was always characterized by "originality, wit and creativity." Perhaps de Laet's most lasting legacy will be the creation of Development Alternatives, a non-governmental organization he co-founded in India in 1983.
Having started with one employee on a project to find a way to build bricks that wouldn't involve cutting down trees for fuel to bake them with, the agency now employs hundreds around the world and is considered a model of grassroots development.
De Laet remained active in many endeavours until he was hospitalized with pneumonia about a month ago, including on the film shoot for Van Brabant's documentary called La dernière planète.
A date has not yet been set for a public celebration of de Laet's life, his widow, Susan, said.

L'ESPRIT DE L'OISEAU OU ICARE DEVIENT PHÉNIX

Le Centre d’exposition de Repentigny présente

L'ESPRIT DE L'OISEAU / Icare devient Phénix

The Repentigny Exhibition Centre presents

BIRD SPIRIT Icarus begets the Phoenix
by Annouchka Gravel Galouchko and Stéphan Daigle
from November 8 th to December 7th, 2008

Repentigny, Tuesday, October 28 th, 2008 – The Repentigny Exhibition Centre presents from November 8 th to December 7th, 2008,
L’Esprit de l’Oiseau : Icare devient Phénix (Bird Spirit: Icarus begets the Phoenix)
by painters/illustrators Annouchka Gravel Galouchko and Stéphan Daigle.

This retrospective traces the artistic path taken individually and jointly by these two Quebec creative artists who have received several national and international achievement awards. The Patron of honour of this event is Marie-Claire Blais, a significant contributor to our national literary scene, both within Quebec and abroad.

The exhibition entitled L’esprit de l’oiseau : Icare devient Phénix is an invitation to enter into the universe of Annouchka Gravel Galouchko and Stéphan Daigle and to partake in their "joint quest for freedom of consciousness, or rather, freedom through consciousness." Birds are a major theme in all the creations, paintings, illustrations, posters and puppets that make up this exhibition, and they will carry visitors through a highly colourful and thought-provoking visual odyssey.

Her learning path in a loving and inquiring family setting, as well as her numerous travels abroad that enabled her to interact with peoples and cultures immersed in exoticism and mystery, allows Annouchka Gravel Galouchko to create in complete freedom. Concerning her artistic development, Annouchka commented as follows: "The texts that I choose to illustrate are overflowing with symbols. They are also a powerful medium that belongs to the collective unconscious. I constantly strive for the symbolic and artistic content of my stories and drawings to be meaningful to both adults and children." Writer Marie-Claire Blais was able to summarize with great transcendence the iconographic content of her works as follows: "..., we are totally mesmerized by magical spells and images from the turned-around world created by the flaming colours laid down by a painter who wishes to tell a story."

Anyone that is acquainted with art prints will quickly recognize the unique works of Stéphan Daigle, who has been able to set himself
apart from the rest by creating a pictorial universe that overwhelms the mind of art goers and brings them to reflect upon the meaning of life and final ends. His ongoing artistic involvement with various companies, corporations, publishing houses and magazines on the national and international level has allowed him to become a highly preeminent artist-illustrator in Quebec. According to Stéphan, "some perceive beauty in situations of opposition and conflict. That's how they extract the fuel to feed their thoughts. I'm more inclined to search for the common ground that allows for the union and harmonization of opposites and differences. In my art, I generally try to build symbolic or noumenal bridges between conceptualized items or worlds as we imagine them."

The opening of this exhibition will be held on Sunday, November 9 th, 2008 at 2 p.m.

The Repentigny Exhibition Centre is located at 3 Place d'Évry, next to the Municipal Library, and it is open free of charge to the public on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; on Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
